Welcome to the Spring 2009 issue of The Line - the electronics manufacturing resource for small- and mid-size companies.

Feature Story

Our Approach to Testing

During our 20+ years of business, we at OCM Manufacturing have produced thousands of products of a great variety. Based on our experience across such a wide range of products, we have arrived at the conclusion that in-circuit testing (ICT) is not an ideal process for the low- to mid-volume, high-mix (HMLV) manufacturing environment.

All test systems and processes have particular fault coverage spectrums. That is, each particular test approach is best suited to detect certain defects and not others. Whether one uses ICT or another process, products must still be functionally tested and sometimes also X-rayed to achieve sufficient coverage. When we considered the role that ICT has played in our business, we realized the following:

  • ICT works best on products that are designed for test, but in the low- to mid-volume markets, electronics that are designed with acceptable clearance and test points to accommodate ICT are a rarity
  • As board densities increase and geometries shrink, it is increasingly challenging for designers to accommodate test points into their designs
  • Area array devices (BGAs) and double-sided SMT further limit access to nodes for testing
  • ICT is costly to implement and small- to mid-size customers are generally unprepared for this

With these realities in mind, we recently made the decision to decommission our ICT test offerings. A strong test offering is available using AOI (to find manufacturing defects), manual inspection (for parts that the AOI can’t cover adequately), X-Ray inspection (for BGAs), and functional testing (to determine whether the device is working as designed). Together, these processes enable us to provide excellent test coverage with maximum automation and minimal cost.

OCM's Paperless Operations

In May, North Americans celebrated Earth Day, and OCM's paperless operation was profiled in various publications and media, including PROFIT Magazine. Our journey to becoming a paperless organization began with a simple decision to "just do it", and since 2000 we have virtually eliminated paper in our organization, process by process. We've done it on our own, without any special investments or resources.

It's an ongoing effort but it has not been a costly, painful or difficult one. Today, we are proud to share our story with other organizations who would like to reduce their environmental impact by reducing or eliminating paper in their operations.

To learn more about our paperless story, you can:

  • Read the article in PROFIT Magazine here.
  • Read this excellent profile from a Government of Ontario publication for small- and mid-size businesses here.

OCM Expansion is Underway

In May, OCM broke ground on the expansion of our manufacturing facility. The expansion will double our capacity to meet growing customer demand for niche manufacturing services targeted at low- to mid-volume products.

The expansion will also enable us to provide more comprehensive box-build services. The new manufacturing line is slated for production in the Fall of this year.
